Orbán: EU ban on kosher slaughter ‘assault on the freedom of religion’
The European Court of Justice’s December ruling concerning a ban on Kosher slaughter is an “assault on the freedom of religion”, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a letter sent to Isaac Herzog, head of the Jewish Agency for Israel, on Tuesday.
Orbán responded to a letter by Herzog dated December 31 which called attention to “one of the most acute and crucial issues of Jewish communities in Europe”.
The prime minister told Herzog in his response that in the past decade the Hungarian government had “strived to ensure the safety and prosperity of the Hungarian Jewish community”.
“Due to our efforts we have experienced a renaissance of Jewish life and Jewish culture in Hungary, marked by such notable events as the Maccabi Games and the annual Jewish Cultural Festival”, he said.
Orbán said he was deeply disappointed to read the recent ruling of the European court enabling member states to uphold a ban on Kosher slaughter.
“I believe this decision is not only an assault on the freedom of religion, but an assault on our Judeo-Christian heritage, and an assault on the Jewish communities living in Europe. Coonsequently, my government was quick to condemn this harmful decision, and we will spare no effort to raise our voice against it in every possible international forum,”
Orbán said.
“I believe in a Europe that not only ensures religious freedom, but proudly stands up for the Judeo-Christian heritage, traditions and values that our countries and societies are based on,” he added.

Cruelly slaughtering animals in that way has no place in any civilised society in this day and age. The EU must stop both Jewish and Muslim people from butchering in this barbaric way within the EU and ban all imported meat that has resulted from this vile practice elsewhere.
Strange comments from Orban re Hungary’s Judao Christian heritage when he expresses outrageous anti Semitic views about Soros
Orban talks of shared Judao Christian heritage yet expresses deeply anti Semitic views concerning Soros.
Soros is a Jewish man. He is not the entirety of Jewish thought.
Soros is a corrupt and evil man who wants the world to live under socialism. Soros is wanted for crimes in several countries.
Attacking a criminal, like Soros, is not attacking the Jewish people….it is attacking a criminal man who happens to claim he is Jewish.
Erik Elcrow surely is not aware of the number of openly anti-semitic “intelectuals” and Holocaust deniers have been awarded high honors and prizes by Orbán during the past ten years. Perhaps a full list will help?
@Mario,
Openly stating the ‘Jewish Holocaust’ not the “Harvest Holocaust of the Thirties”, is a crime in Hungary and Germany.
So your saying you have some evidence on Orban is fit for a crime? Step up bro and push it to the authorities, the rest of us will watch you, LOL!
Leaving aside Orbán’s infamous over-friendly encounter with a group of Belgian students all members of a racist and antisemitic association ( Tuşnad, Romania. 2018, ) Orbán’s endorsement ( later retrieved, of course ) of the project to erect a statue to antisemitic politician Hóman in Szekesfehervár, and the numerous antisemitic remarks expressed inany occasions by Fidesz politicians and pro-regime media during the past decade, we can speak of Zsolt Bayer ( knight’s cross of the Hungarian order of merit in 2016 ) Kornel Dobrentei ( Laurel of Hungary ) Mihaly Takaro ( knight’s cross in 2014, Laszlo Nemeth prize in 2018, Jozsef Attila prize in 2019 ) Gyorgy Dorner ( Kossuth Lajos prize 2020 ) Erno Raffay ( knight’s cross of the Hung.etc.etc 2020 ) ….
All anti-semitic authors.
By the way, Takaro, Dorner and Raffay also make up the panel that decides the recipient of the Ferenc Herczeg prize, a prize creared by minister Kasler in 2018.
